Clinical Study of the Operative Treatment of Ankle Fractures

Abstract
The primary goal of treatment of the ankle fracture is to effect the returning of normal function that is accomplished by the early institution of motion.
The authors analysed 44 cases of ankle fractures treated operatively in Orthopedic Department, Dong-A hospital from March 1990 to January 1992.
@ES The results obtained from this study were as follows;
@EN 1. Of the 44 cases, male was 31 cases(70.6%), female was 13 cases(29.4%), the most common victim was third and fourth decades.
2. The causes of the injury were traffic accident(48.7%), slipping down, falling down and sports injuries in orders.
3. Open fractures were 5 cases(11.4%) and closed fractures were 39 cases(88.6%).
4. The most common type of the ankle fracture was supination-external rotation type (40.8%) and next was pronation-external rotation type(31.9%), according to the classification of Lauge-hanse.
5. According to the criterion of Meyer, the result of treatment was good or excellent in 36 cases(81.9%) of clinical results, in 37 cases(84.1%) of radiogical results.
6. the results of the treatment were better in those cases of the early reduction and the mildly displaced cases than delayed reduction and severely displaced cases.
7. operative treatment affords the most predictable way to carry out an absolutely anatomic reduction of fractures and a low complication rate.
